George Henry Newman practices criminal defense nationwide in the Federal Court system, and throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in state cases. His practice is limited exclusively to criminal defense in trial, appellate, habeas corpus, and asset forfeiture matters. He is certified as a criminal trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Mr. Newman is a sole practitioner with his office in Philadelphia. He received a B.A. with honors from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971, and a J.D. from Temple University Law School in 1975. Mr. Newman is a former Assistant Defender for the Defender Association of Philadelphia. He also clerked for the Honorable Richard B. Klein of the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County (now of the Superior Court). He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Eastern, Middle & Western Districts of Pennsylvania, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (PACDL), and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL). As an active Philadelphia criminal defense attorney, he served in 1987 and 2004 as Chairman of the Criminal Justice Section of the Philadelphia Bar. From 1993-1999 and 2007-2013, he served four three year terms, to which he was elected, on NACDL'S Board of Directors. He helped found PACDL, and served as vice president from 1988 through 1990. He has lectured and written on criminal defense, forfeiture, legal ethics and legal research, and is listed in Who's Who in American Law. Currently, he serves as NACDL's Parliamentarian, co-chairs NACDL's long range planning committee, and serves on NACDL's Champion advisory board, as well as on the executive committee of the criminal section of the Philadelphia Bar Association.
