Newton County Jail is located in the town of Decatur, Mississippi, 153 miles Northeast of Birmingham, Alabama. Decatur’s history began in 1836 when their village had been selected for a county seat. During the civil war, Decatur had been destroyed by Sherman and his troops, and the villagers decided to rebuild it. On October 10, 1912 it rose from the status of village to town.
